This regression was caused between kernel versions 2.6.15-8-686 and 2.6.15-9-686
(which is when you reverted the huge firewire patch you had).

I don't have 2.6.15-8 on my desktop and I can't find a copy, but on my laptop
(powerpc) 2.6.15-8 works and 2.6.15-9 is broken.
