OK, I have it working again after a few days of teeth-gnashing. I
followed a combination of hints from
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=7295, Bug #32446, Bug #32123,
and some others I've forgot. I removed all kernels, udev, initramfs-
tools, then reinstalled udev, initramfs-tools by installing ubuntu-
minimal, then installed linux-image-686 and it rebuilt the initrd which
finally worked.

I'm really pleased that it's usable again - and LugRadio Live 2006 has
its MAME machine back!
