I compiled a fresh 2.6.17.6 kernel and system crashed, but I noticed I forgot to provide ACPI support :)
Look at dmesg for the string "apm: overridden by ACPI", or any clue ACPI is work properly. If it is present, ACPI support is enabled. Does crash still occour?
