Thanks james. I had just figured out the same by looking at the sleep.sh
script which obviously will let gnome-power-manager handle everything.
Btw runing all the scripts in /etc/acpi/suspend.d obviously helps
because I don't have the X server crash anymore.
So my only remaining problem is with suspend to disk which only resumes
properly sometimes with i386 kernel and never with i686 SMP kernel. When
it does'nt work I get a screen similar to this:
