I just used all the defaults on the LAMP install process.  I got around
it by doing the server install on the alternate CD and then manually
installing the AMP.  The computer I'm doing this on is just one I had
lying around, no exotic hardware or anything, and since the install on
the alternate CD works fine, I'm pretty sure it's somehting with the
server CD's kernel.
