[Bug 48304] Kubuntu Dapper fails to install from CD ISO image (buffer, ide, cdrom errors)

Hi

I have a  working dual boot Fedora Core 4, Windows XP laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600) which I would like to do a clean install of Kubuntu Dapper 6.06 LTS on. Downloaded the image, and burnt to CD using K3B in FC4, md5 checksum checks out.
System boots ok from CD ROM, get the Screen where I can select different boot options (Start or Install Kubuntu, Check CD etc etc)

Choose Start or Install Kubuntu (or the other install options) and I get
to the "Mounting Root Filesystem" and the install stops. After about 5
minutes the screen goes to a unending Buffer I/O errors on hdc (cdrom).

So, have read a few bug reports here and tried those solutions but none
seem to work (like adding nolapic noapic etc to boot options). Once I
remove the "quiet nosplash" from the boot option line I get the
following:

boot option
preseed/file=/cdrom/preseed/kubuntu.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.gz ramdisk.size=1048576 root=/dev/ram rw --

these errors appear

hdc:irq timeout : status=0xd0 {busy}
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
hdc: ATAPI reset complete

then after a few repeats of the above:
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, sector NN
hdc: tray open
end_request I/O error, dev hdc, sector NN

not word for word, as i was copying it down to paper.

System specs:
Dell Inspiron 8600
Dual Boot (via grub) Fedora Core 4, Windows XP
HDD : 40 Gig (hda)
DVD/RW : (hdc)
NVIDIA Geforce4 4200 2 Go 64Meg
512 Meg Ram
1680x1050 res


My system in Windows and Linux plays movies and cds fine. I checked the CD installer on my wife's ASUS laptop and it all works fine (didn't install though, just a check).

I think it's one of two problems:
1. My CD drive is heading to the grave (i.e dying) - I'm wondering why I get tray open errors when the tray is closed..
2. The Kubuntu iso image installer doesn't like my system


If anyone has any solutions, would be great to see them.
