It's probably bad form to respond to your own comment, but still, there
are two things I'd like to add:

* I've checked, and the line from the shell script is correct
* Why don't these simple commands work right from the beginning, and turn off the fan?

sudo -s
echo -n 3 > /proc/acpi/fan/FN1/state
exit
