a little bit more testing:

2.6.15.7 from kernel.org works fine.

2.6.16 from kernel.org works not.

so the bug lies in patch-2.6.16 (see kernel.org).

changelog of this seems similar to changelog between ubuntu version
2.6.15-22.34 and 2.6.15-23.35.
