[Bug 34604] OSS not included, likelihood of having easy-to-use sound / ever being sane drastically reduced

Public bug reported:

Dapper does not include OSS support. ALSA support for the Sound Blaster
Live! (I have a value edition) is confusing/overcomplicated/poorly
implemented/poorly documented/flaky/bad.

It took me over half an hour this afternoon to find the set of mixer
controls which need to be turned on to get Line input played out of my
digital-out speakers (it only took about 15 minutes until it was playing
out of the analogue output). It is still only playing out of the left
speaker (If I plug the jack into the Mic input, I can get it to play out
of the right speaker only - I suspect that is because it is a stereo
jack and the Mic input is a mono jack). Most users would've given up and
said "it doesn't work" (I had until a friend came and turned on *every*
mixer control in alsamixer, and then whittled down from there.)

This is opposed to OSS, where the emu-config tools did the job very
nicely. The mixers are also properly labelled, and it is easy to change
the playing input/recording input using, for example, aumixer.
Additionally, the OSS system exposed the rich sound routing/filtering
available on the Live! without complication.

     Importance: Wishlist
         Status: Rejected
