Comment:
Ben,

I tried the latest kernel with the 2.6.16 git backport of the new
aic79xx driver and things have got much worse unfortunately.

A kernel lockup on boot now occurs.

I switched the boot options to non-quiet and watched the messages as the
boot proceeded. It got some considerable way through. I could see the
two scsi devices being loaded and noted that the 3.0 version of aic79xx
was doing the honours. The kernel locked up after a series of scsi
errors quite similar to those noted in previous comments above. In
particular the last line before lockup was:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dump Card State Begins>>>>>>>>>>>

I would worry a lot that this change may be very buggy and affect not
just us rare beings with a scsi cd burner.
