I found that setting the position_fix=1 module option fixes the static.

I added a file to /etc/modprobe.d which contained the line
snd-hda-intel position_fix=1

Possibly this is something that needs to be in the sound driver, to
automatically apply this option for device IDs known to have the
problem.

Perhaps the driver already does that; I get this line in dmesg when loading the module:
  hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

I'm not sure how to get a device ID for the audio chipset.  I don't see
anything in lspci, at least.
