Thank you for your report. Lets try to get this a wee bit clearer:
1.) When booting ubuntu with boot splash screen, the computer goes dead.
This is just like in #67487 . I don't think the gfx chipset makes a big difference.
2.) When disabling the bootsplash by using the "nosplash" kernel boot
option, the systems behaves as described in bug #22985 . X starts but
displays on the external monitor point instead of the built-in lc
display.
3.) "Safe graphics mode" won't work with edgy because of bug #59618
X will still continue using the ati driver instead of vesa. Thus it will mix up the graphic outputs.
Please try booting with the bootsplash deactivated and provide an
Xorg.0.log file from that boot. I can use this in order to decide
whether it really is a duplicate of bug #22985 or not.
