[Bug 71576] Recognising USB Hard Drive - Dapper AMD64

Public bug reported:

This seems to be related to  Bug #49367 and a number of usb issues but
none exactly this problem.  After a server reboot they seem to work
again for awhile until the error happens again.  I'd rather not re-boot
my server.

The command
modprobe -r ehci_hcd
does not work.

I use 3x 300 Gb external usb hard drives - formatted to xfs for backup on my server install.
At first all work fine,  then Dapper seems to stop recognising the drives.  i.e. plugged in, switched on but then not seen on an fdisk-l - and I cannot mount.  

I get this in dmesg.
