Public bug reported:

I can not get Ubuntu 6.06 or Xubuntu 6.06 to boot up on a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR1010 NX with 768mb ram. When I try with out the switches, it causes the machine to constantly reboot. However with the switches being used I get the following results:
153.877829 Kernel Panic - No Syncing: VFS Unable to mount root FS on unknown block (8,1)
153.830601
At this point the machine freezes and I have to reboot to get it going again.
With other DEBIAN linux distro's I have also had problems similar with no resolution.
I have also tried Live ACPI=OFF NOAPIC NOLAPIC and I get a similar error message only the numbers are different
66.830539 Kernel Panic - No Syncing: VFS Unable to mount root FS on unknown block (8,1)
66.830601
Non Debian linux work fine with the APCI=OFF command like Knoppix/Damn Small Linux/Puppy. Any help is greatly appreciated.

** Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: Unconfirmed
