[Bug 32156] network stops after 6+ hours of idle

Public bug reported:

After leaving the machine idle for hours, certain network applications
stop working, firefox stops opening certain sites, ssh also doesn't
connect to certain machines.

Observing with tcpdump showed a SYN packet going out from my machine and
then recieving a SYN/ACK, but the last ACK from my machine doesnt get
sent, the destination retries numerous times resending the SYN/ACK but
never to recieve the final ACK,  then the connections gets RST.

this happened in breezy and dapper, kernels 2.6.12-9-386 and
2.6.15-15-386
