[Bug 47462] While booting, fails to load hardware drivers

Public bug reported:

I'm using Kubuntu Dapper RC1 i386 (upgraded from Breezy) plus today's
updates on an Athlon 1400 MHz system with 1GB RAM on an Asus A7A266
board.

On about 2 out of 10 boots, the system hangs for a few minutes at
"Loading hardware drivers ...", then switches to text mode with a
"[failed]" concerning the hardware drivers.

I've tried to find this boot attempt in my logs, but there seems to be
no trace of it in any of the logs in /var/log.
