  Whenever I boot from the beta live CD or from the very latest kernel in
  the edgy repos, I get a kernel panic with the following message:
  
  "[28.495769] <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"
  
  I am using a pentium 4 w/ hyper threading on a via chipset. The kernel
  version is 2.6.17-10-386.
