I have same problem and still no solution. The upgrade from Breezy to
Dapper seemed to be the reason to the freezes, often during a session
but mostly in the login screen. At he same time the sound was missing in
some sessions and worked in others. Annoying, but not as critical.

Then came the edgy beta which I installed on another disc. And at last!
It seemed to be stable. Because of the beta status I used my "old" and
over long time tuned Dapper only playing and tuning/configuring Edgy.
But then came the 6.10 upgrade! Again no sound as described above, and I
have had one freeze by now!
