Thanks for the heads-up.  I've re-enabled sound and the problem seems to
have gone away.  I'm running Feisty, kernel "Linux ferrari
2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 06:17:24 UTC 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux".
Audio on incoming chats works (although I've disabled it again because
it's so annoying!) and VoIP seems to work perfectly too.
