You have been subscribed to a public bug:
With a Kubuntu 6.06 downloaded today (5th august 2006).
Install a Kubuntu on the 7th partition an external usb drive STOREX CLUB UHCR-350 and configure your Bios to boot on external usb drive.
I had previously another debian install on internal drive.
Remark:
During install usb disk partitions blinked becasue unmounted and remounted by Qtparted. It could be good to deactivate kde usb disk detection during QtParted process..
During the install kubuntu complains about swap (is Debian swap partition different from kubuntu one ?).
Then kubuntu live install tells i can reboot, i do.
i configure my bios to boot on usb-hdd.
it start , i see my hdd blinking and kubuntu-grub starts :
1.
kernel is not found by grub
this is due that menu.lst generates a (hd0,0) instead of a (hd0,6).
Well, fix is to use grub edit (e) and change the 0 by a 6 (depending on your system)
2.
kernel starts loading but it hang on
'Waiting for root file system'
changing root= by root=/dev/sde7
3.
Still same problem than 2
but power off + power on of external USB HDD did force sde detection and boot
additionnaly
4.
Selecting Debian internal system
still menu.lst is broken is should contains root (hd1,1) for partition /dev/hda2 when in usb alternate boot where it contains only root.
By chance this time Grub edit (e) to set the right root allow to reboot without having to change back bios usb boot value.
