You have been subscribed to a public bug:
I attempted to install Dapper using the graphical installer on the live
CD. I tried this on both an IBM ThinkPad X31 laptop, and an AMD64-based
desktop. I had no problems with the AMD64.
On the ThinkPad, I noticed right after booting that performance was poor
- the DVD drive never stopped spinning for an instant, and the desktop
was unbearbly slow. I opened a terminal and ran "top" but CPU usage
didn't look unusually high.
When I clicked the installer icon, things got much worse. On my first
install attempt, the fatal problem came after I selected my time zone
(Taipei) from the map. The installer froze. Even the mouse cursor
couldn't move, and the power button didn't work. I could only break free
by pulling the plug and removing the battery (this is a laptop, so no
reboot button).
I made a second attempt. This time the installer got to step 7, where it
should install packages. But after 30 minutes of the drive furiously
spinning, not a single app would install. I could still move the mouse
cursor, though just barely. I couldn't abort, so I pulled the plug
again.
I succeeded getting Dapper installed on the ThinkPad using the text-mode
install CD. The installer ran speedily, and Dapper itself works fine now
that it's installed on the hard disk.
Just to be sure my DVD drive isn't defective, I booted Kanotix today (a
live CD with graphical installer). There were no performance issues, so
I don't believe that the hardware is defective. But the Dapper live CD
runs very slowly (and even freezes) on this machine.
More info on my hardware:
IBM ThinkPad X31, Centrino processor, 1.6 GHz, 256MB RAM. The DVD drive is external, connected through the USB port).
