I got this problem in xubuntu desktop feisty 7.0.4. Although I know it
should not be a long run solution installing debian etch kernel worked
for me.

The debian etch kernel packages I've installed were:

kernel-image-2.6-amd64-generic_2.6.18+6_amd64.deb
linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64_2.6.18.dfsg.1-12_amd64.deb
linux-image-2.6-amd64_2.6.18+6_amd64.deb
