We are having trouble with writing to DVD-Ram for quite some time now, 
but always with ubuntu 6.06 (since its LTS).
Unfortunatelly i can not reproduce the disapearing DVD drive. This just 
happend once to us recently.

The whole backround is that we wrote a Backup script which uses rsync to 
backup onto DVD.
