I have had this same problem since fiesty (when I started using ubuntu).
I have a 2.0 powered usb hub and a plantronics dsp-500 headsets. I have
tried it with a 1.1 usb hub and it does work fine. Not really knowing
the problem relied in the kernel, i have tried every distro ubuntu has
to offer and they all have the same problem. It usually ranges from, the
sound not working at all from boot, music programs(Amarok,Exaile, and
more) crashing, and the song just plays 2 seconds and then the sound
cuts out when the music is still playing (Have to restart the song
multiple times or pause and unpause for it to work). I hope there is
some progress in this problem because I am limited in usb ports on my
laptop.

Thank You

P.S: All the information is attached I am currently using Xubuntu 7.10 ,
but the problem is still here in every flavor of ubuntu.
