Same problem on a Thinkpad with Kubuntu Hardy Final and iwl4965. I'm
able to connect manually, but then I experience random network-related
hangups: the machine doesn't even respond to sysRq sequences and has
its Caps Lock LED flashing.
Basically, i have to paste each time this sequence:
sudo ifconfig wlan0 down&&sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc&&sudo ifconfig wlan0 up&&sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid winet&&sudo iwconfig wlan0 key XXX &&sudo route add default gw 192.168.0.1
since on boot it seems iwlwifi ignores the ad-hoc mode set in /etc/network/interfaces
