I followed instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerManagement

I had been using a new laptop for few days:

root at hereford:~# smartctl -a /dev/sda -d ata
...
=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0032 099 099 000 Old_age Always - 16266

A very high number for such a short time! Load cycles were raising few
cycles per minute which was very very aggressive. Luckily ceg's
PowerManagement instructions provided a proper workaround and
Load_Cycle_Count stopped increasing.
