FWIW, this was tracked down to a difference in the content of the entries
being written out by grub based on the output of 'lsb_release -d', and was
resolved in grub 0.97-29ubuntu14.
There have been some further issues with upgrades from 6.06 to hardy on
account of differences in the overall behavior of update-grub in those older
versions; these issues are tracked as bug #187362.
