First of all I am not a software guru and I need complete detail help.
I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on an hp a820n Pentium 4 "inside Windows Vista
Home Basic". That is the second choice on the CD when inserted while
Windows is running. It uses a Windows file so that Ubuntu can be
removed simply by going to Control Panel and selecting "install/remove
program". This gives me a neat way to see if Ubuntu will operate
correctly on my computer and if not can be easily removed. On startup I
am given a choice of 1. Windows or 2. ubuntu. My computer has an Intel
82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset. I also can and have installed the
Nvidia FX5500 video card. Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.10 run fine when I use the
Intel Chipset, but when I install the Nvidia FX5500 it will not complete
the startup. It works fine in Windows and all of the drivers were
installed from the Nvidia installation CD. When booting in "ubuntu" the
orange scan bar, after I installed the latest nvidia-glx(May 26, 2008),
completes and then the terminal mode comes up and the last line says
"int.rc-default main process(4919) killed by SEGV signal". If I reboot
without the Nvidia card Ubuntu works fine with high resolution. I tried
using BIOS and selecting the chipset and then booting "ubuntu" and then
running ENVYNG and selecting auto-detect NVIDIA card. It did not crash
and then I changed the BIOS back to (PCI) and rebooted in "ubuntu" and
the system crashed. I went back and uninstalled the Nvidia card and
selected chipset in BIOS and "ubuntu" came up in low resolution and I
was unable to correct it. I used ENVYNG and uninstalled NVIDIA auto
detect. Still the same problem.
I then booted in Windows and uninstalled ubuntu. The good thing about
Ubuntu 8.04 is that "inside" Windows is that I can reinstall Ubuntu and
all of the updates in about 33 minutes. This I did and of course Ubuntu
works fine again in "chipset" mode without the card installed or with
the card installed as long as I don't select (PCI) in Bios.
I hope this gives you the information you need as it seems apparent that
the problem is obviously in the nvidia driver for Ubuntu.
Thanks, James
