Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: linux-image
My 2.6.24-19-generic amd64 kernel froze while trying to read a
smartcard. It appeared initially to be a gnome/nautilus problem, but the
problem also showed up when I tried to 'ls' the mount folder, and
restarting X did not fix it - I had to reboot the machine.
How I did it:
I double-clicked on the 2.0 GB Media icon on the desktop (at 12.34 - see
the matching kernel oops in syslog); nothing happened. Then nautilus
wouldn't open from anywhere (either from Gnome or the command line - see
attached strace-nautilus.log).
If it's relevant, Xorg.0.log started showing:
SetGrabKeysState - disabled
SetGrabKeysState - enabled

mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.

...
After forcing all nautilus windows to close and re-running nautilus, every X window froze for around 30 seconds. Then all went back to normal (X windows unfroze and nautilus started opening normally etc) UNTIL I tried reading the 2.0 GB Media folder again, whereupon nautilus froze again and couldn't be killed with sudo kill -9.
Version info:
kernel 2.6.24-19-generic (amd64)
nautilus 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2
hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu8.1
