Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: initramfs-tools
Problem:
New machine with Intel 945 chipset. Installed Kubuntu 7.10 and ran without issue. A week later added Windows XP and found that Kubuntu would no longer boot.
Reinstalled both OS's several times, played with GRUB looking for
problems. Changed hard drives partitions around and swapped from SATA
to PATA etc... Eventually found that after 'removing power' from the
machine (and allowing power supply to discharge) Kubuntu will boot
normally. This has to be done after any Windows boot.
All updates applied to Kubuntu.
Symptoms:
7.10 LiveCD will drop in BusyBox shell with 'initramfs' prompt
7.04 LiveCD gives '/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off'
Old Knoppix CD with 2.6.9 kernel just works
Kubuntu: Grub works fine, starts loading kernel, then freezes on splash screen (no progress bar)
My guess is that this initramfs and that Windows is leaving some
persistent memory corruption, but I really have no idea!
** Affects: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
