Ok, I cannot make the mic register anything with ubuntu hardy up to
date. dell xps 1530 but this is a generic and long-standing (see bug
37736) hda intel driver issue, at least in ubuntu.

I attacch a screenshot of any possible control I have in latest ubuntu
(alsamixer, gnome sound applet and pulseaudio) that shows that the mic
seems to actually get some signals but at a very slow volume and
actually nothing is reproduced after the recording.

Anyone has some tip?

chip is SigmaTel STAC9228.
