I also had problems like this on my nc6220 laptop starting with gutsy,
often when moving the laptop the system hang for a bit and activity in
the (empty) cd drive could be heard.

Since upgrading to Hardy this seems to be over, only very short breaks
if at all when moving the laptop to access the cd drive.
