The TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D has a firmware bug.
Solutions discussed here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/75295/comments/97

The following are indicators of this problem:
"[ 1430.749371] ata1: port is slow to respond, please be patient (Status 0xd0)" see wjpwu dmesg above (message a little different pre-hardy).
& most people also report a freeze cycle of about 5 seconds with a very short period of un-freeze (for feisty & gutsy - not sure about hardy).

This is a duplicate of Bug #75295 but for Hardy. The upstream report
should be closed (unless someone is building a workaround - unlikely).

I have been using the TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D cross-flashed with
Samsung SC03 firmware (from ASUS AS05 firmware) for 9 months without re-
occurrence of issue.
