Same problem here on ubuntu 8.10 server (2.6.27-7-server, i686), AthlonXP, "nForce 2 ultra 400" chipset.
"shutdown now" command doesn't power off the server, I can even ping the machine after this command was issued (although services like ssh and smb are stopped immediately).
"shutdown -r now" works (the server reboots without problems).
