pulse-audio seems to have an effect.
i can reproduce with skype and pidgin.
this has just been upgraded with ibex.

1. launch pidgin.
2. launch skype and start a conversation.
3. end the conversation
4. skype will not play nice pulse audio (will notice by not being able to start a new conversation in skype)
5. kill pulse-audio
6. skype is ok again
7. pidgin will hang and refuse to die.
