Me again with some more updates. I've checked with the final release of
Intrepid 64-bit and I am experiencing this same problem. For the
purposes of troubleshooting I tried two other Live CDs. Hardy 64-bit
actually has the same problem (I'd previously run 64-bit Hardy on a
system with a Core 2 Duo and had no problems, now using an Athlon X2).
OpenSUSE 11's LiveCD loads fine.

I'm not sure what differences in packages there are between the two
distros, but since I can get the system running in SUSE... what
information would be useful to provide to maybe narrow down the cause of
this?
