In recent kernel versions you could also try to use the usb_storage
module parameter quirks:

sudo rmmod usb_storage && sudo modprobe usb_storage quirks=12d1:1446:i

This prevents just your Huawei Modem from beeing detected as a storage
device (in my case the E1762).
