What I meant is what happen if you do:

sudo echo 15 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness
sudo echo 5 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness

If 5 is brighter than 15 then it could still be a kernel problem but
even then, maybe not..
