I can confirm that the solution provided actually gives some input but
compared to alsa only (without pulseaudio) I noticed much more noise in
the recording and it sounds distorted.

I am using an increase of +25db, the +50db made the recording completely
distorted and contains only noises and clicks. I see this just a
temporary fix and somehow the whole thing worked without workarounds in
8.04 and it was loud and _clear_ then.
