This is probably not helpful, but for some reason on my dell 1420
inspiron audacity somehow started taking input from the microphone at
the proper volume levels (not the low ones I normally see).
Unfortunately, I haven't reproduced that result since.  Skype also
picked it up for that one session, but not thereafter.
