adding "enable_msi=1" to "options snd-hda-intel ..." in "/etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf" fixed this for me

initial symptoms beyond the kernel messages were some failing audio
applications (notably "jackd" reporting "ALSA: poll time out" and
crashing with a flood of "broken pipe" messages in "qjackctl"), also
noticed there were no "HDA Intel" interrupts (0 counts on both cpus) in
"/proc/interrupts", with the fix applied there are lots of interrupts
and sound works great (even "jackd").
