I can confirm this on Karmic with 2.6.31-14, on an HP Elitebook 2530p.
The workaround rmmod iwlagn && modprobe iwlagn works for me -- thank you
Chris! In the linked bugzilla entry it is claimed that there are patches
that may solve the bug:

It is not clear from the bugzilla message what is the status of those
patches. Have they been merged into a mainline kernel?
