I have tried what looks like the most recent kernel being prepared for
Kosmic Koala (9.10), and my Ethernet controller was no more stable than
before; it will, after being plugged in, toss a few pings back and forth
with an 80% packet loss, then give up altogether. Its "lspci" entry is:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 01)

The kernels I tried upgrading my Jaunty Jackelope (9.04) server to (by
downloading them directly from the Ubuntu package repository then
installing them via "dpkg -i") were (copying the following from my
dpkg.log file to make sure I don't make a mistake):

linux-image-2.6.31-020631rc8-generic 2.6.31-020631
rc8 2.6.31-020631rc8

linux-image-2.6.31-9-386 2.6.31-9.29
