I am using an Intel Mac Mini, which, for over a year, never had these
problems running Fedora, and I have been having this problem for the
past two months now (using Mythbuntu) so I guess there is something in
Ubuntu which has caused it.

I have tried all the solutions I have found from purging the alsa
install, rebooting many times, changing the PCM volumes and changing the
modprobe conf.

None of these are a permanent fix and the issue will come back after a suspend.
Specifically the modprobe conf changes are interesting, as entering model=macmini causes all sound to stop on restart of the system (same results as using all other mac model options).
