I have an AR242x, and I haven't had the problems you're describing.

What Atheros chipset does your DLINK card use?

What does "lspci | grep Atheros" and "sudo lshw -C network" tell you?

Have you made sure the problem doesn't occur when connected with wired
connection?

Have you tried on another wifi network?  Perhaps a friend's, or a coffee
shop's?
