Ah, I bet this regression is due to

  * drm/i915: Stop trying to use ACPI lid status to determine LVDS
    connection.
    - LP: #515246

This was explicitly added to be able to support external monitors, and
has worked fine until now. Why was it ripped out wholesale? Wouldn't it
be a better solution to only ignore the ACPI status if there is only one
monitor?
