[Bug 555502] [NEW] shutdown hang on ubuntu 9.10

When I try to shut down, the screens go black with just a flashing
cursor but the system never actually powers down.  I don't get any
messages at all.  I'm using ubuntu 9.10.

I've followed the thread in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sysvinit/+bug/468589 but I'm
not using wubi and the fix there seems to be already applied on my
machine.

I've also tried the fix described at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8264916&postcount=52 , but no
luck.

I'm using kernel 2.6.31-20-generic, but I've tried older kernels with no
change.
