spoke too soon; freezes seem arbitrary, it looks like they were what was
causing occasional boot failures even before i upgraded to lucid

it _does_ freeze with the kernel from #2; it seems something is in the
ether between reboots, i tried removing the battery and whatnot but it
seems that the device is in a stupor for a while before the module can
be loaded without a freeze
