[Bug 560480] [NEW] 10.04 changes make it impossible to recover from root filesytem errors

Public bug reported:

My root filesystem (ext4) gets errors every once in a while, because of
kernel freezes (usually during suspend/resume). When booting the latest
10.04 dailies, I can't recover the filesystem. The init sequence keeps
trying to run fsck which fails with some error. I will attach pictures
of the boot screen in both normal mode and safe mode.

This bug is reproducible on my system76 Leopard (system info included in
this bug report) and MacbookPro5,1 (system info available at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/559807).

I'm guessing "linux" is not the right package to report the bug, but
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage told me to report it
against linux.

I hope you can find some time to fix this bug. It's really a pain to not
be able to fix a filesystem via fsck in safe mode.

Thanks!
    Victor
