Please can you help me?

Dual boot set up Grub defaults to latest incarnation of Ubuntun 9.10 ; 2.6.31.20 but does not run the GUI. can be started with startx but runs slowly and does not run the wireless function. Tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure x server-xorg to no effect.
Selecting an early version of 9.10 enables a satisfactory operation.
Please help and treat me as a beginner.
